Ask the chefs you know what single item they’d take with them on a desert island for cooking, and you’d get a range of answers. But there’s only one item whose usefulness spans the modern gourmet kitchen, the campfire, and the desert island alike… and that’s the cast iron skillet.
At home anywhere and built to last, they’re the most versatile, resilient, and appealing of pans to use. If you haven’t experienced the simple and satisfying joys of cooking on cast iron, here are 3 reasons to fall in love with the cast iron skillet.
1. Cast iron is non-toxic.
I first discovered the benefits of using cast iron after learning about the serious health risks of cooking on Teflon. Cast iron is ancient technology, and is not linked with any health risks. With proper seasoning and care, your skillet will become extremely non-stick. I even use mine to cook pancakes!
2. Cast iron lasts… forever!
If you’ve ever owned a cheap skillet, you probably noticed that it didn’t last long. So-called non-stick coating chips off, the pan bottom warps, or something else fails.
Not so with cast iron, which is built to last. My favorite skillet is approaching 100 years old and it’s still the most-used pan in my kitchen! I’ve even beat it up by using it to cook over an open fire while camping. That brings me to the next reason to love these things…
3. Cast iron skillets can do anything.
Take ’em from oven to stove top, campfire and glass top cooking surface (with diffuser), and these workhorses will still do an amazing job of cooking your meal. The only place you can’t put them is in the microwave, of course.
I’ve baked cornbread in mine, browned a cheese-topped concoction under the broiler, and cooked hamburgers over a campfire in the woods. Each meal was easy to cook and came out delicious, every single time.
Those are just a few of the reasons to love cast iron skillets!
While cast iron cooking may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are lots of devoted cooks who swear by their cast iron cookware, many of whom use the term “love” to describe their feelings for it! If you’ve never tried cooking on a cast iron skillet, do yourself a favor and give it a whirl- you may surprise yourself and become a devoted fan too.
